Hotel Mumbai has received great reviews in Australia following its cinema release on March 14. It continues to roll out worldwide including a nationwide release in the USA on 29 March.

This Australian/American thriller is based on the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008 and was inspired by the Electric Pictures’ Emmy nominated documentary, Surviving Mumbai . The ensemble cast of hotel workers and guests include Dev Patel, Nazanin Boniadi, Jason Isaacs, Armie Hammer, Anupam Kher, and Tilda Cobham-Hervey. The assailants are Amandeep Singh, Suhail Nayyar, Yash Trivedi, Gaurav Paswala.

The Australian director, Anthony Maras, has made an astonishing debut with this feature film which has been very well received in Hollywood:

Maras directs with passion and a cool professionalism combined, while Peter McNulty edits the film with deep understanding of cinema. Delivered by superb performances, many of the characters will stay in our memories… – Andrew Urban, Urban Cinefile

Extremely tense and very well-made. I came home and hugged my wife and kid. – Kris Tapley, Variety

A heart-pounding, blood-soaked, white-knuckle nightmare of the highest quality. – Matthew Eeles, Cinema Australia

In his interview with Cinema Australia, Maras says:

The documentary Surviving Mumbai really opened my eyes to what was going on behind the attacks. It taught me something that I hadn’t realised before. In the Taj in particular you had people from every conceivable background. People from very different socioeconomic backgrounds, religious backgrounds, ethnicities, social status, you name it. They were all caught up in this hell, and to see how they reacted to it and to see the selflessness and cooperation and to see people overlooking the fact they came from all these different places and helping people get out of this situation together was incredible.

The film’s message is well expressed in the words of cast member Jason Isaacs:

the film captures “the essence of this miraculous outburst of humanity and bravery that kept so many people alive” – Hollywood Reporter

And simply, from Dev Patel:

you can’t bring us down Hollywood Reporter
