The ‘boom and bust’ state of Western Australia proudly claims a rich diversity of entrepreneurs when it comes to business success

Perth likes to boast the highest proportion of self made millionaires of any capital city in the world, usually a result of the boom and bust of the State’s resource sector. Yet Western Australia proudly claims a rich diversity when it comes to business success. Three of the last five Australian Entrepreneurs of the Year are from WA, and none were from mining.

In this series we spend a year in Boomtown following seven high flyers from a rich mix of industries. We watch as iiNet founder Michael Malone takes his billion dollar company in a brave new direction; we accompany fashion icon Ruth Tarvydas as she launches her label in New York only to return to Australian shores to fight a retail slump; and we witness history in the making as Nobel Laureate Barry Marshall develops a medical breakthrough that could save millions of lives across the globe. We follow builder Sasha De Bretton who transforms renovating timescales by offering massive renovations in just four weeks; we learn how car dealer John Hughes trounces car salesmen across the country; and we see how Bree Maddox proves that being sexy isn’t a barrier to intelligence or success. We also meet mining CEO Mike Young whose company is undergoing phenomenal growth as it capitalizes on the opportunities the mining sector offers, yet must also battle falling iron ore prices and rumours of a bust.
